When I began the Catholic Mothers Online blog roll, I started using a blog roll service from BlogRolling.com.  For a long time, this seemed like an ideal situation.  It was free at that time, ad free (at that time), and worked well.

Then, there were times in 2008 when their site went down.  During those times, I couldn’t do any updating to the roll.  Then, in the fall of 2008, it was unusable until well into 2009.  That meant absolutely no updating of the roll.  It was frustrating to have it all be out of my control.  I had finally decided to figure something else out if it hadn’t come back up by a certain date.  But, then it did, so I stuck with it.

Most recently, it seems that Google has been flagging blogs with JavaScript coding from BlogRolling.com as having malware.  Apparently this stems from some certain blog that did have malware on it and also had some coding from BlogRolling.  (At least that’s what I understand from some reading that I did.)

This, of course, is what made me realize that we needed some big changes in the blog roll:

1. Nobody will have scrolling links on their site with the list of Catholic Mothers Online blog roll members on it. In fact, I actually deleted the roll off of their site.  (I was hoping that might help with some of the issues, but it didn’t seem to.  It would appear that people really need to just take that coding off of their blogs, even if the roll doesn’t exist on blogrolling anymore.)

2.  If you are on the blog roll and already have only the button option (no scrolling links), then you are fine. It is all html coding and has no script from blogrolling in it.  (However – if your coding is older than this summer, you still might want to update it to the new blog location information.  See lower down for a link to the new coding.)

3.  The entire list of blogs on the blog roll will now appear on Catholic Mothers Online.  If you look on the navigation bar above, you’ll see a choice of blog roll members.  That will then drop down with an alphabetical listing.

3a. One of the things I really like about the listing this way here on our website is that with it being broken down into smaller sections (rather than one huge list), it will make many blogs more easily noticeable.

4. Go check out the new coding for the Catholic Mothers Online buttons, if you need to do any switching (either just to update to the new URLs or to find something to replace your old javascript coding that allowed you to have the scrolling links on your site).

5. If you don’t mind – could you pass along word about this on your blogs? Not everyone on the blog roll reads this site, and sharing it on multiple sites will help reach as many people as possible.  (I don’t want anyone to have to have malware warnings going out to people who try to visit their sites.)
