Bring Lent to Life {Book Review}

by Jen on February 16, 2012

I’ve got a huge list of someday items for Lent.  Why someday?  Because they just don’t work in my current life.  My children are young (4 and 1) and many activities are either over their heads or over their tolerance level.   When I read Bring Lent to Life by Kathleen M Basi, however, I was stoked to find activities that my 4 year old would get!

Bring Lent to Life is not just a booklet explaining how to do one activity during Lent.  Rather, Kathleen explains the how and why and even has several discussion points to help set the mood with children.  And most beneficial to me is that she spoon feeds me the words and ideas.  I’m so bad at explaining things at an appropriate level!

Subtitled Activities & Reflections for Your Family, Bring Lent to Life packs a powerful punch.  It’s only 94 pages, but includes plenty to help get a family with small children ready for Easter.  I can’t wait to use it!  There are 2 main activities, one that is worked on through all of Lent (an Easter Tree), and the other being Resurrection Eggs.   The weeks of Lent are divided into themes with a few suggestions and reflections for each.   I love that it’s not a daily activity, oh-no-I’m-behind-AGAIN kind of book.  Instead, it’s a relaxed, but focused way to share the season with my little blessings.

Even if Lent has already started, you can easily peruse the contents in less than an hour and start using it right away.  You don’t even need lots of special craft supplies!  In fact, if you have a preschooler, you probably have everything you need.   I would recommend this book from about 2 – 8 years old.  The higher end is more for older siblings as there are probably “harder” things you can find for them to do, but you can engage them in these family projects as well.

Jen can be found writing at Happy Little Homemaker.

Thank you to the author, who provided this book at no charge in order for me to review it!

Aptly timed, we started our Lenten conversation over dinner last night. Thank you for the book suggestion.

Thank you so much Jen for sharing this review. I also have a 1 and 4-year-old and a 6-year-old and it is difficult finding activities that they can comprehend. And, as you stated given their attention span this booklet sounds perfect. I look forward to sharing the reflections and activities with my family. Thank you and God Bless
