Blogs Being Hacked: Please Make Sure You Are Using Newer Blog Roll Coding

by Angie on September 1, 2011

Last year (September 2010), I changed up all of the blog roll coding because of numerous problems with the company that we had been using for the blog roll for the three and a half years prior to that.

While I posted about it, and asked people to pass along word on their own blogs, I don’t have an email list of everyone on the blog roll (there are more than 600, and it is a pretty fluid group of blogs), so that’s the best way I knew to get out the word.  I also put links about it on the sidebar here, and in the drop down to see blogs on the blog roll.  Unfortunately, some people still hadn’t gotten the word (or maybe are a little like me and put it off when they first read about it and then forgot to do it).

Here, again, is the post about it that also contains a link to the document that has all of the newer (from September 2010) coding.  (If you have joined in the last year or changed it since then, then you’re fine.)  If you previously had the scrolling links list, however, and you still have that on your blog (even though the scrolling links haven’t shown up in a long time), then it is vital that you change it.

Blogs that still contain the script coding from blogrolling.com (that includes not only CMO blogs that still had that coding on it, but blogs that had any blog roll from them) have been hacked by someone who has hacked the actual script.  (They haven’t gotten into your personal blog to hack it specifically, but are using the coding that you have in that widget/gadget to hack it.)  The hack is that blogs with that on there are being redirected to another site.

So, to be clear – this has not been an attack specifically on the Catholic Mothers Online blog roll.  It has been a hack on the blogrolling.com system (which went out of business some time after we stopped using their blog roll service).

To fix this, please make sure to remove the old coding, if you still have it on your blog and replace it with the new coding (A simple, nice html coding.)

Also, please share this post with other Catholic mothers via your blog or Facebook page, if you don’t mind.  Thanks!
