I scrimped and saved for my iPad 2, and now I’m working on learning all the fun things I can do with it. Applications, or apps, are amazing, and they make up the biggest chunk of what you’ll find on my iPod touch and iPad. I’ll share some of my favorites, so you can add them to yours, too!
1. Kindle
There are a multitude of books I want to read, and not nearly enough time. With Amazon’s Kindle app for iPod and iPad, you can take your books on the run. This is perfect for doctors’ office visits, or carpool lines! A majority of the classics are free, and most books have a sample available, where you can read the first chapter for free, to see if you like it. They also have the option to ‘loan’ one of your titles to a friend, and some libraries are working with Amazon to allow you to check out e-books. What books do I have on my Kindle for iPad? This app from Ave Maria Press is simply beautiful. You can use this to help you stay on track with this treasured devotion.

I’m pretty picky on listening to the Rosary. Some renditions are too slow, some are too fast, but this one from the Daughters of Saint Paul is perfect!

4. Confession: A Roman Catholic App
I’ve been going to Confession more this year, but I never seem to be totally comfortable with the routine. I forget the Act of Contrition and sometimes I overlook some things I should be confessing. This app walks you through Confession, and keeps track of the date of your last Confession. The Examination of Conscience is wonderful, and walks through each Commandment, unearthing things you may not even think of. It’s customizable for multiple users, and is different for married folks, priests,and children.

Want to pray the Liturgy of the Hours? iBreviary has every thing that you need to join in the Sacred tradition. There’s also a missal included, to help you follow along at Mass and keep up with the readings. There’s even a section of Rites – my favorite is a blessing for an expectant mother!

6.Compline
Want to start out praying the Liturgy of the Hours, on a smaller scale? Be sure and check out Compline, or the Daily Night Prayer. I’ve used this in my home, and especially enjoy the downloadable audio so I can turn it on and listen. An added bonus? It seems to help my children get to sleep.

Catholic Radio Apps
I’ve learned a tremendous amount from listening to Catholic radio shows and podasts. These apps make it simple.
Ave Maria Radio was where my family first discovered Father John Riccardo and his podcasts. This is a must add to your app list.

9.iCatholicFM
The Catholic radio service of Holy Family Communications, you’ll be able to listen to shows such as The World Over with Raymond Arroyo, The Doctor is In with Dr Ray Guarendi, and Women of Grace.

10. EWTN
Not an app, per se, but EWTN’s mobile site. You can look through Catholic news headlines, and watch or listen to EWTNs shows. Since we don’t have cable in our home, this is a great option for me.

I have a GIANT collection of apps — I’ll just have to hand you the iPad one day, and let you look through them. I neglected to mention one of my free ones …. it’s a Catholic Directory that looks up local parishes and Mass times. I discovered that there was a St Brendan parish in Florida while we were on vacation. If I had felt better, we would have stopped in.
I love the ap Evangelizo. It has the daily readings and a devotion to go with the gospel. Usually by a saint or a well known priest. It also has prayers and the saints of the day. It is free! I also wanted to say how much I love the stations of the cross you recommended. My two year old loves to get on my phone and “look at pictures of Jesus.” The artwork is a beautiful way to use this devotion throughout the year.

I love this thanks! Some others that I love are, “the Catholic directory” you can search by address, bookmark churches, or search by location. It will tell you the address, Mass and confession times. Perfect for traveling. You can also watch the Mass with this app. The “Magnificat”, has daily prayers, Mass readings, and stories of the saints. And for the kids, “Where’s Jesus” just like Where’s Waldo, only so search for; Moses, Mary, David, and of course Jesus, there are different levels and you are timed, great fun!!

I use iMissal too, it has a daily passage and different prayers, as well as a Saint of the Day. I want to say it was .99 or 1.99 I can’t remember though.
